Rhumb Line - May/June 2011
News From Willsboro Bay Marina
Update June 15, 2011 - 100.42 feet
Join us at 9:30 am on Saturday morning June 18 for complimentary coffee and home-baked muffins (courtesy of Tami and Phyllis).
We have received our first delivery of 91 octane non-ethanol gasoline; gasoline currently for sale still contains some of the previous product and is therefore approximately 90.5 octane and should contain under 2.5% ethanol. Further deliveries will reduce the ethanol content to near zero.
Zero-Sort Recycling is now available with one container (dumpster) assigned for this purpose. Please read the program instructions carefully before putting any material into the recycling container. Plastic bags, plastic wrap, plastic film and food waste must go in the trash rather than in recycling. We request your continued cooperation by raising the locking bar after every use of either the trash or recycling containers as this puts the important notice at eye level for the next user.
The pump-out controls have been restored to normal operation. Home fleet members with their own adapters are now able to perform self-serve pump-outs during business hours.
Update June 4, 2011 - 102.2 feet
We are pleased to announce that the marina is in full operation with all docks accessible from shore and provided with electrical and water services. Our pump-out and fuel dock are now open with limited hours (9:00 am to 3:00 pm Thursday through Monday, closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays). Gasoline currently available for sale is 89 octane E10 (10% ethanol). We expect to receive our first delivery of 91 octane non-ethanol gasoline in the coming week. Pump-out service is currently offered by marina attendants only; self-service pump-outs are not yet available.
This posting concludes our spring commissioning updates as the marina is now in full operation. We thank all of our clients and friends for their encouragement, patience and appreciation as we worked through these challenging circumstances.
Update June 3, 2011 - 102.3 feet
- Dock 4 electrical service completed.
- Dock 3 water system installation is approximately 75% completed and we expect to fully complete it on June 4.
- We will offer Zero-Sort Recycling beginning Tuesday June 7. Please pick up a brochure at the marina store and carefully review program requirements before putting items into the recycling container.
- We have found a supplier for 91 octane non-ethanol gasoline for this summer. This gasoline will reduce or eliminate many of the ethanol related fuel system problems.
Dock 4 Electrical Update, May 31, 2011 - 102.81 feet
NYSEG has just confirmed (at 8:45 AM today, Tuesday May 31) that the new electrical service for dock 4 is scheduled for connection late this week (by June 3). This is weather dependent. If storms cause extensive damage then storm damage repair will take priority over our new service connection resulting in delays. We will continue to keep you informed of all progress and further developments.
Dockage Update, May 27, 2011 - 102.20 feet
We are pleased to report that we have just completed temporary modifications to our gangway systems to provide access to all five docks. With this work completed for all docks we are removing the "gangway to shore" column from the above table.
Water service is complete on docks 1, 2, 4 and 5. We plan to complete the water system on dock 3 next week.
Electrical services are installed for docks 1, 2, 3 and 5.
Dock 4 Electrical: Our contractor completed his work on the new service
entrance for dock 4 on May 25 and the work received the electrical inspector's
approval on May 26; however, we still must wait for the local utility company
(NYSEG) to place a new pole and connect the service. This process is
out of the marina's control. NYSEG is hopeful for connection next
week but cannot yet guarantee a date. Continued storms result
in extra emergency work for NYSEG crews in repairing service
interruptions and unfortunately that work receives priority over
installation of "new" services such as ours. We will continue to post all significant developments and updates here.
Dockage Update, May 23, 2011 - 102.58 feet
We continue to make substantial progress on anchoring and electrical work and intend to install all new utility raceway covers on dock 3 this week. Once these have been completed we will direct our attention and resources toward gangway work. We have plans and material to make all docks accessible from shore without need of waiting for further water level reduction and we will put these plans in place as soon as possible. We hope to report some progress late this week and substantial progress in the following week. Dock 4 electrical hookup is dependent on a contractor, electrical inspector and a public utility so that may take longer.
We are now launching on a regularly scheduled basis so we have removed the interim launch status list from this page.
Launching, Dockage and Flood Update, May 20, 2011 - 102.64 feet
We request your cooperation by not parking in the boat storage area while launching is in progress. The boat storage area will be blocked off by traffic cones during those times. Ample parking is available in the campground and in the dock 4 and dock 5 parking areas behind the showroom.
We have made substantial progress in anchoring this week and while anchoring work continues, a second team is working on the electrical systems and will proceed on to plumbing once electrical work has been completed. Wiring is now 90% complete on docks 3 & 5, and dock 2 was completed earlier this week. We are hopeful (but cannot guarantee) that NYSEG, our local electrical utility company, will be able to set the pole and energize our new service for dock 4 by the end of next week.
Launching, Dockage and Flood Update, May 16, 2011 - 102.32 feet and rising
Our highest priority in readying docks for your safe use is anchoring. Unfortunately our efforts have been slowed as water turbidity (cloudiness) from recent rainfalls makes it difficult to see and untangle fouled chains and lines and difficult to find and access our in-water stockpile of anchors that we made last fall. It is again raining and the lake will continue to rise again with a crest predicted for May 25. We continue working steadily and diligently toward securely anchoring our docks. Once anchoring has been completed we will move on to electrical work, gangways, and water, pump-out and fuel services. Your continued patience is deeply appreciated.
Launching, Dockage and Flood Update, May 13, 2011 - 102.32 feet
We are well on the way to making our docks available for your use, but electrical and water services will be delayed on some docks and most docks will not be connected to shore and will require use of your own dinghy for access. We tentatively plan to offer launching next week on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday May 18, 19 and 20 to those who are ready under these conditions. On May 23 we tentativly plan to begin our Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday launching schedule for those who are ready. Weekend launching will tentatively begin on Saturday May 28. Pumpout and fuel services will not be available until the lake level drops below 100 feet as we cannot inspect our plumbing until that time.
If you have scheduled launching for any time during the month of May please contact us with your preferences as follows:
- Yes, I will launch even if there is no gangway to my dock (boat owner's dinghy needed for access) and no electrical service.
- I require a gangway to shore (but not electrical service) before launching.
- I require electrical service (but not a gangway to shore) before launching.
- No, I will not launch until both gangway and electrical services are available.
Flood Update, May 5, 2011
Lake Champlain has reached 103.1 feet, fully 3 feet over the flood stage of 100.0 feet. It's currently raining and we expect the level to rise further. We wish to assure you that all stored boats and our buildings are high and dry and that our facilities are not vulnerable to flood damage. We had all of our docks installed and gangways connected before the lake reached 101 feet. As the lake exceeded that level we removed gangways to prevent damage to them. We will reinstall the gangways when the lake level drops below 101 and we expect to commence launching at 100.5 feet. Until then, our docks and Travelift pier are off-limits to all but marina staff. {We have since made modifications to gangways so that all docks are accessible without regard to water levels and we are launching boats without regard to water levels.} Due to these unusual conditions and extensive new electrical improvements some docks will not have electrical and water service until after launching has commenced. We will continue to update this page with all significant developments. Check the current Lake Champlain water level provided by the USGS (United States Geological Survey). Additional photos can be seen on our facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/wbm.us
Forklift
We have just added a second Forklift, JCB model 940, to our fleet of equipment. This will expedite future dock installation and removal and having two forklifts provides a vital backup.
Unprecedented High Water, April 30, 2011
We are experiencing unprecedented high water of nearly a foot over the previous record and mere inches short of 103 feet! While our facilities are well-equipped for high water, this extreme is challenging for us and will result in some delays in boat launching and in deploying electrical and water services on our docks. We may need to postpone launching. Please check back periodically for updates. Those who launch in the first two weeks must understand that due to these challenges, dock electricity and water services may not be available until a week or two after launching begins. Similary, the fuel dock and pump-out might not be operational until a week or two after launching begins.
Speed Limit 5 MPH
For the safety of our marina crew, children and clients we remind you that automobiles must obey a 5 mile per hour speed limit on marina property.
Electrical Planning
We will be working on our electrical installation on our docks over the next few weeks. Our standard electrical configuration is one 30
amp 120 volt receptacle per boat with two boats sharing each 30 amp circuit.
If you require a larger or additional electrical receptacle you should have already been billed an additional $350 annual fee. If you
require a larger or additional electrical receptacle but have not yet been billed this fee please contact us immediately to enable us to
install the appropriate wiring before we close the raceways on the docks.
If you have already been billed the fee please contact us with your boat's electrical configuration so that we can try to match our wiring to
your boat. Please do this even if you are a returning client and the custom wiring is already in place for you. Typical configurations
are:
- Two 30 amp 120 volt inlets
- One 50 amp 120/240 volt inlet
- Two 50 amp 120 volt inlets (not as common)
Dock Corner Wheels, Fendering, Dockboxes
Due to our substantial investment in new and improved docks we have revised our marina rules relating to dock corner wheels, dock fendering and dock boxes:
Boat owner must consult with marina management before making any modifications, improvements or additions to docks or attaching anything to the docks, and must follow installation guidelines provided by management. Dock corner wheels, Plastimo dock fenders and some other items may require initial installation by marina staff at boat owner's expense. Maximum fastener size for Plastimo dock fenders is a 1/4" X 1-1/2" lag bolt and 3/16" pilot holes must be drilled. Maximum fastener size for any other item is a #10 screw and all holes must be predrilled. Screws may not go into electrical raceway covers. Nails may not be used for any purpose. Dock boxes are limited to one per slip and a maximum size of 24" depth, 36" height and 72" length and must be top opening
chests rather than front or side opening sheds. Dock boxes must be placed flush with outside edge of dock, not set inside of cleats and may only be placed on mains, not fingers. Larger dock boxes can be stored ashore on the storage platforms that the marina provides for this purpose. Some fendering material may need to be removed and reinstalled seasonally by owner or at owner's expense. Owner is financially responsible for any structural damage to docks caused by owner installations or modifications.
Other Seasonal Notices and Reminders
- Bottom Sanding - All sanding and grinding jobs and equipment must be approved by Paul Mero before commencing work. All sanding and paint debris shall be collected with drop cloths and disposed of properly. The boat owner is financially responsible for clean-up of other boats and marina facilities fouled by sanding debris. Sanding and grinding may only be performed with approved dust free equipment with vacuum collection. Skirting around the boat, ground tarps and disposable coveralls are required, and a full face mask and safety goggles are strongly recommended. Disposable coveralls must be removed before entering the marina store or bathrooms.
- The marina requires proof of proper and adequate insurance coverage (including liability and workers compensation insurance) from any outside contractor or paid laborer before permitting them to work at the marina, along with proper release and indemnification . This requirement applies to anyone working on boats at the marina other than the boat owner or the owner's immediate relatives (spouse, siblings, parents, children). Outside contractors and paid laborers must provide proof of compliance with all applicable governmental regulations, including pesticide applicator certification for anyone applying antifouling paints.
- Shrinkwrap may not be placed in our dumpsters and we do not provide free disposal of shrinkwrap. Shrinkwrap recycling kits are available for purchase at the marina store. Disposal fees including labor and the cost of the needed shrinkwrap recycling kits will be billed for all shrinkwrap found in or around our dumpsters or left on marina grounds.
- Air conditioners, heaters and water heaters must be shut off when boats are unoccupied. Their operation while boats are unoccupied is a senseless waste of resources, a safety hazard, and an unnecessary cost and strain on the marina's electrical system. The marina will monitor for cooling water discharges and electrical consumption and we reserve the right to disconnect or shut down these items without notice when they are found running in unoccupied boats.
- Dockside water hoses may not remain connected to unoccupied boats because a minor plumbing failure could then sink a boat. Electrical cords may not be connected to shore power receptables on the dock unless the other end is already connected to a boat, as this is an electrocution hazard.
- Boatyard Supplies and materials - We maintain an inventory of wooden blocks, cut lumber and Styrofoam blocks in order to properly set and store boats and docks. These are not scrap or surplus materials; please do not borrow or move these materials without authorization from marina management.
- Boat owners must supply properly sized and placed fenders and docklines. A minimum of 3 fenders and 4 docklines are recommended and dock lines should never run straight down from the boat to the dock. Boats should be sprung to maintain adequate clearance from the dock and appendages such as anchors, anchor rollers, bowsprits and davits should never overhang the dock.
- The marina is approaching 100% occupancy; we may find it necessary to change some dock assignments for optimum use of the available space.
- We can order almost any item, part, accessory, or supplies needed for your boat; therefore, it is inappropriate to have items ordered from our competitors or any other sellers of any type of boating supplies, accessories, or parts shipped to the marina. Packages arriving from these sources will be refused. In special circumstances, we will accept a package not containing competing merchandise, provided that special arrangements are made before the package is shipped, including a written request and payment of a reasonable fee for our handling and storage. Should a package from a competitor be accepted due to extenuating circumstances or error, a substantial handling and storage fee must be paid upon pickup of the package. COD deliveries will not be accepted under any circumstances whatsoever. The marina is not responsible for damages, shortages or loss to accepted packages, and unclaimed packages may be disposed of after 30 days with no further obligation. Our service department's policy is not to install equipment or use supplies purchased elsewhere or from our competitors. Please purchase your equipment and supplies from us if you would like us to install or use them. Under extenuating circumstances we may elect to install equipment or use supplies purchased elsewhere, however, a surcharge of 15% of the retail price of the materials will be added to the cost of the job.
